Originating in the region of Turkey, this species grows to 3-4’ tall with long spikes of Irish green bell-like calyces borne in whorls along the stem, 6 “bells” per whorl. The true flowers are white or lavender, held within each calyx like “a lady in a bathtub,” which Armitage cites as another common name. Armitage also suggests direct seeding in cool weather, or 2 weeks of prechilling to break dormancy. Other sources suggest light as necessary for germination, so press into soil, covering lightly.
