Blushed Butter Cos Very popular pink-blushed blend of butterhead and cos qualities. Leaves are dense, buttery, savoyed and folded, nicely proportioned to fit a salad plate, and easy to remove from the head without tearing or bruising. Highly rated for flavor by our customers and the Philomath High School Botany Class, which has conducted detailed trials on our lettuces every year since 1995. If teens like it, it’s... pricing and more

Brown Goldring This is our least appreciated, best flavored lettuce. In replicated studies over two years that included blind taste tests by 28 teenage Botany students, 80% rated this (unfortunately named) variety as “sweet,” and less than 10% rated it bitter. None of the other of the 20 tested varieties came close to this ranking. One student suggested renaming the variety “Rocket Shine”... pricing and more

Crisp Mint Another Botany Class Favorite for sweetness, and for yield in cold weather and short days of autumn. Makes heavy heads with real romaine backbone, flavor, and juice. Mint green wrapper leaves surround crystal white hearts of savoy-puckered leaves. Has a more closed and rounded top at full maturity than Plato II. Looks like the top of a 10-gallon hat. pricing and more

Dubya Dapple Density The tightest, tiniest, most glossy, two-toned, wavy-margined mini-romaine I've ever seen. Half the size of a 'Winter Density', and maybe twice as dense--a really compact, crisp, and flashy executive lettuce with a densely blanched pinkish heart. Summer bolt resistant, and fully resistant to downy mildew. pricing and more

Flashy Trout Back This is our own selection derived from the variable cos heirloom ‘Forellenschluse’ (Austrian for “speckled like a trout’s back,” aka ‘Freckles’ in some catalogs) and it has received rave ratings from past trial seasons. ‘Flashy Trout Back’ is uniformly and densely splattered with bright red splashes on a medium green background. Blanched hearts of mature plants look like ‘Cast... pricing and more

Irene Green Gem One of my favorite lettuce personalities of the year, Irene jumped out of a trial bed like she was ready to go, heading up faster and more uniformly than similar gem contenders. Dark green 6" rosettes quickly form tight fists of crisp white hearts, each a salad for two. From the Island Gems series (Manoa x ... pricing and more

Lava Lamp Romaine Part of the retro romaine scene you won't want to miss...convections of red and yellow in high contrast hearts of romaine. Includes 'Crisp Mint' in the parentage, which comes through in the crunch. Best at full maturity, remains non-bitter even at onset of bolting. Probably a good "celtuce." pricing and more

Little Gem A gem of a dense little green romaine, and therefore its name. One of the most pleasant and productive lettuces ever grown, selected for close spacing and intensive 6" x 6" greenhouse production in an English climate. This is the prototype for the compact “mini-head” types that have lately become so popular in the market. I think of this as a new class of lettuce in itself, and have begun to n... pricing and more

Manoa Leopard A beautiful dark spotted heading lettuce with a strong Hawaiian influence, selected for a preponderance of short rounded leaves in a tight blanching head of medium dark green leaves, selected against tip burn and downy mildew. Manoa Ocelot This could have been named “Mini Manoa Leopard,” but we’ve learned that this invites confusion. A variety with great flavor and crunch within a small frame, can easily be spaced 8” within the row, probably 6” is sufficient. Leaves are thick, savoyed, golden green spotted with red that extends into the blanched heart. pricing and more

Mayan Jaguar The bigger framed cos of these two spotted cats. Dark red splashes are in high contrast over dark green ruffled leaves, wrapped into a tight upright head, with that bone crusher romaine crunch. The blushed hearts are pink as rose petals. Outredgeous This variety is so red that botany students didn’t recognize it as lettuce when they saw it in our breeding nursery back in ‘98, though a crowd did gather to discuss what it might be. A nice upright cut salad variety, forms a loose romaine head at maturity. An outrage of red in the salad bed, becoming a standard for salad growers. I guess this is our hit.

Pan The deep vibrant green of this selection makes me think of the Greek ‘figure and force of nature,’ Pan himself. This comes from a cross of 2 deep red lettuces (‘Pandora’ X ‘Red To The Heart’), but shows not the slightest blush. A dense hearted midi size, about right for 9” spacing, with a texture between butter and romaine. Shows good downy mildew resistance and is slow to bolt. pricing and more

Red To The Heart Romaine I have several lines of this phenotype, one of which will become the final selection to go with the name. For now this can be considered a type that includes solid rose-red heart leaves, or hearts that are painted in red and gold patterns. At the Portland Breeder's Variety Showcase, bowls or these were mistaken for Treviso chicory hearts. But the taste and texture is all lettuce--crisp, juicy, swe... pricing and more

Zeb Romaine Tall bullet head romaine with well closed tops that make tight savoyed hearts. A little uptight compared to the other heads on these pages--more Mediterranean isle style than Pacific isle style, if you follow me. More Plato, less Manoa. If you speak lettuce, you know what I'm sayin. pricing and more
